Purpose of the Event: To assess and enhance the knowledge of students about wildlife and foster a spirit of competition and teamwork among various departments
3. Event Summary
Description: In celebration of Wildlife Week, the Zoology Department of Union Christian College, Aluva, organized a highly engaging inter-departmental quiz competition on October 7, 2024, aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation and biodiversity. The event commenced at 1:30 pm in the III BSc Zoology classroom and was designed not only to test the knowledge of students but also to promote a spirit of healthy competition and teamwork among various departments.
The primary objective of the competition was to assess and expand students’ understanding of wildlife, their habitats, and the importance of environmental conservation. The quiz competition was structured into two sessions, covering diverse topics such as Animal Diversity, Ecology, Evolution, Wildlife Conservation, and general knowledge. The event encouraged students to delve deeper into the world of wildlife and appreciate the significance of preserving biodiversity.
The event began with an inaugural speech by Ms. Rima Joseph, the Head of the Zoology Department, who set the tone by emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation in the modern world. The remainder of the event was conducted under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Femi Thomas, the Association teacher-in-charge, ensuring the smooth flow of the competition.
A total of 16 teams participated, with students from various departments of the college showing great enthusiasm. Teams comprised two students each, and they demonstrated their knowledge and collaborative skills through competitive banter and lively discussions. The quiz was hosted by Alen Alex, a student from II PG Zoology, whose insightful commentary and interesting facts added depth to the quiz and kept the participants engaged throughout. Smruthi and Athul from II UG Zoology were responsible for preparing the questions, which tested participants’ depth of knowledge and quick thinking.
The competition was divided into two sessions. The first session was a preliminary round that consisted of 15 questions. Participants were given question papers, and the quizmaster, Alen Alex, displayed and explained each question. The participants wrote their answers on provided sheets, which were later collected and evaluated by volunteers. The top five teams with the highest scores advanced to the second session.
The second session consisted of three rounds, each with progressively challenging questions. The first round had 15 questions, while the second and third rounds had 10 questions each. In these rounds, if a team could not answer a question, it was passed to the next team, encouraging participants to think on their feet and remain attentive. The third round featured multiple-choice questions (MCQs) with varying formats, including picture identification, sound identification, fill-in-the-blank questions, short answer questions, and true or false statements. This variety ensured that teams were tested on their comprehensive understanding of wildlife-related topics.
The competition was intense and engaging, and after a series of competitive rounds Suhailath and Nafeesa from II PG Zoology, claimed the first prize with 60 points. Nitha and Lakshmi from II BSc Zoology, secured second place with 50 points, and, Adnan and Niya from III BSc Zoology, finished third with 35 points.
The Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr). Mini Alice, graced the event by presenting prizes to the winners. She also delivered a congratulatory message to all the participants, appreciating their enthusiasm and knowledge. She commended the Zoology Department, both teachers and students, for organizing such an intellectually stimulating event that contributed to the holistic development of the students.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Femi Thomas, who acknowledged the efforts of all the organizers, participants, and volunteers. The success of the quiz competition was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Zoology Department, and the department looks forward to organizing similar events in the future to foster academic excellence, teamwork, and a deep appreciation for wildlife conservation among students.

Results/Achievements: The inter-departmental quiz competition organized by the Zoology Department of Union Christian College as part of Wildlife Week had several significant outcomes and impacts:

This would allow participants ample time to prepare thoroughly, ensuring that they can delve deeper into the topics and perform at their best. Early announcements would also increase overall participation, as students could organize their teams more effectively and study relevant materials in a more focused manner. This suggestion underscores the enthusiasm of the students and their desire to actively engage in such intellectually stimulating events.
